Jacomo Rafael Bairos
Conductor
Biography
Described in the press as “thrilling,” “inspirational,” and “world-class,” Portuguese-American conductor, Jacomo Bairos is continuing to redefine what it means to be an artist, leader, and innovator in orchestral performances for the 21st century. Bairos challenges preconceptions of orchestral repertoire by fusing musical genres, integrating the orchestra into the broader community in new and dynamic ways. He is trailblazing a creative path of what the future of the orchestra can be, today.
Annually in demand with some of the world's great orchestral institutions, Bairos collaborates with the Boston Pops; and the San Francisco, National, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Atlanta, Iceland, and Singapore Symphonies. Bairos also works closely with today’s most prolific and inspiring Grammy and Award-winning musicians from both the classical and contemporary worlds. This includes classical soloists such as opera sensation, J’Nai Bridges; violinists Ben Beilman and Alexi Kenney; and pianists Jeremy Denk, Anne-Marie McDermott, and Garrick Ohlsson. Contemporary artists include: Wyclef Jean, Ang é lique Kidjo, Robert Glasper, Jacob Collier, John Batiste, Kishi Bashi, Ben Folds, and Aaron Diehl. Bairos has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works from artists of all backgrounds, and created the first-ever composer-in-residence position at the Amarillo Symphony with young American, Chris Rogerson.
Defined by innovative programming, genre-bending collaborations, artistic excellence, community and institution building, as well as education initiatives infused with mindful and wellness practices, Bairos has reframed the role an artistic leader can hold for its organization and the communities it serves. Along with composer/arranger Sam Hyken, Bairos is Co-Founder and Artistic Director for Miami’s Nu Deco Ensemble, which has been described as “sonically spell binding” by Billboard, an “orchestra for the 21st century” by the New York Times, and “fiery, captivating and refreshingly original,” by Saratoga Living. Bairos is in his 8th and final season as the 17th Music Director for the Amarillo Symphony, having presided over unprecedented artistic and fiscal growth, consistently sold-out performances, a complete revamping of all education and outreach programs, and dozens of commissions by today’s ground-breaking composers.
A graduate of The Juilliard School and Peabody Institute, Bairos has performed, recorded, and toured the world with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, and the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops.
Bairos teaches mindfulness practices, yoga, and guides meditations for the youth members of Nu Deco NXT. He also presents workshops on mindful music education to public school music teachers throughout South Florida. Bairos makes his home in Miami Beach, with his Carolina dog, Sophie.
